Youth violence is prevalent in communities all across America.  In an attempt to stem the tide, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado has initiated a community-wide effort called Steps to Success. Realizing that youth are our most important asset, this program is dedicated to promoting positive youth development and preventing youth violence in Far Northeast Denver’s Montbello neighborhood.

In 2012-2013, over a thousand Montbello parents and young people participated in the Steps to Success community survey and thousands of young people participated in surveys at their school.  The survey results show strengths and challenges of life in Montbello.  We learned that a low percentage of youth felt that they were recognized for positive behavior. The Steps to Success Positive Recognition Campaign aims to improve this by encouraging parents, community members and schools to recognize young people for doing what is right!
